Trephination is one of the oldest known surgical procedures. Meaning drilling of bone, it was once widely used as a treatment for many medical disorders. Today, the term trephination has been replaced by the term bone marrow aspiration. This procedure is an invaluable diagnostic tool for the evaluation of many hematological disorders. It is also used for diagnosis, staging, and therapeutic monitoring of lymphoproliferative disorders, such as Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, multiple myeloma, and other myeloproliferative/myelodysplastic disorders. Bone marrow aspiration may also be used to harvest bone marrow from a donor for use in bone marrow transplantation.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide surgical technologists and laboratory professionals accurate information on how a bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy is performed and how the samples are prepared. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss relative pathology and purpose for performing bone marrow biopsy/aspiration.
  • Discuss instrumentation and supplies necessary to perform a bone marrow biopsy/aspiration procedure
  • Describe the steps of bone marrow aspiration and/or biopsy, as well as proper specimen handling

This was an interesting summary of a procedure I have never performed before. I feel I have a reasonable grasp of what is expected of a CST, should they be involved in this procedure. I also appreciate the number of specimen options and the importance of confirming the surgeon's preference for specimens retrieved during bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.

These procedures I am familiar with, however, the aspiration and the chemistry of bone marrow was fascinating information.
