Rigorous adherence to infection control measures is critical as COVID-19 — a novel coronavirus that is causing a global pandemic — is transmitting in communities and hospitals in the absence of an effective treatment or vaccine. The response in the United States has been further undermined by limited ability to test for the virus. Healthcare workers are on the frontlines against the global pandemic, which can cause fatal infections in some people yet spread from some others who have no symptoms. With no vaccine nor effective treatment, healthcare personnel must rely on a diminishing supply of personal protective equipment, stepping into harm’s way while trying to protect frail patients. These articles cover the latest on guidelines for healthcare professionals from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Upon completion of this anthology, participants should be able to:
  • Identify clinical, legal, or educational issues encountered by infection preventionists and epidemiologists;
  • Describe the effect of infection control and prevention issues on nurses, hospitals, or the healthcare industry in general;
  • Cite solutions to the problems encountered by infection preventionists based on guidelines from the relevant regulatory authorities, and/or independent recommendations from clinicians at individual institutions.
  • Identify particular clinical, administrative, or regulatory issues related to the care of hospital employees;
  • Describe how the clinical, administrative and regulatory issues particular to the care of hospital employees affect health care workers, hospitals, or the healthcare industry at large;
  • Cite solutions to the problems faced in the care of hospital employees based on expert guidelines from relevant regulatory bodies, or the independent recommendations of other employee health professionals.
