Course Overview

Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive imaging modality that offers excellent visualization of pelvic organs in a variety of clinical settings. Imaging can diagnose and stage disease, plan treatment, and monitor response and outcomes of diseases with significant morbidity and mortality. Strategies to improve image quality are paramount to maintaining diagnostic accuracy. MRI is fast and reliable and offers better soft-tissue contrast than other imaging modalities. MRI of the pelvis is indicated for evaluating acute pain, assessing orthopedic and osteoporosis-related injuries, viewing gynecological disorders, and staging and monitoring many types of cancer. Both conventional MRI and functional MRI techniques, such as diffusion-weighted imaging, are useful in evaluating the pelvis. MRI of the pelvis is safe and effective in several special populations.
