Course Overview

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2020) estimates that 1 in 54 children will be diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in their lifetime. It is important for occupational therapy professionals to be knowledgeable of treatment approaches that have demonstrated effectiveness in children with ASD. One such practice is the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Recent studies demonstrate that many children with ASD can benefit from this approach, which can be readily incorporated with other OT approaches. One such practice is the use of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This module outlines the basic principles of CBT, how to apply these techniques for children with ASD, and current evidence supporting its use.
