Summary:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the percentage of children with an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnosis has increased an average of 3% per year since 2003 (7.8%) to 2011 (11%). ADHD has been associated with myriad behavioral, social, and psychological problems that can result in school failure, family problems, social difficulties, depression, and anxiety. Children with ADHD are more likely to be traumatically injured due to their impulsive and active behavior. This continuing educational module will update you on the characteristics seen in the disorder and the current recommended management.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ knowledge of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name three main characteristics of ADHD
  • Describe medication treatments and diagnostic tools available for ADHD
  • Identify the two most common adverse effects of stimulant medications

Very informative about "looking past" the outward symptoms of laziness, and "all boy." I frequently treat children like this who have a hard time focusing to complete all of their rehabilitation/treatment.
