Anxiety disorders continue to have a high prevalence across the U.S. and much of the world. These disorders are divided into several subcategories, including social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, selective mutism, panic disorder, specific phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, and agoraphobia. Treatment options for anxiety disorders include lifestyle modifications, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are generally considered first-line therapy for anxiety disorders, but other agents may be used as well. Proper monitoring is necessary with these medications as they can have serious adverse effects. Pharmacists can play a vital role in education and help provide recommendations for selecting an optimal medication based on patient-specific factors. Knowledge and expertise of the various drugs used for treatment of anxiety disorders is fundamental for proper treatment and patient safety.

The goal of this module is to provide pharmacists, physicians, and social workers with information regarding the classification and epidemiology of anxiety disorders along with proper pharmacological treatment options. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the various types of anxiety disorders and their common characteristics
  • Review various drug classes used to treat anxiety disorders
  • Compare and contrast pharmacotherapy options for the treatment of anxiety disorders with regards to their safety, efficacy, and place in therapy
  • Describe the pharmacist’s role in the management of anxiety disorders
