Summary:

Healthcare has become increasingly complex within an environment of rapid change. Healthcare providers are faced with the challenges of adapting quickly and responding to the unprecedented demands for strategic planning. In turbulent environments with many interconnected and moving parts, healthcare professionals need additional skills in their toolbox. The need for interprofessional teamwork was recognized more than 10 years ago with the emergence of the quality and safety breakthroughs. The National Academy of Medicine, formerly the Institute of Medicine, and other experts maintain that IP teams can improve the quality of care, and that as a group, they problem solve more effectively and lead to improved outcomes. Healthcare providers have never been faced with such tremendous challenges in creating new models of care delivery as they are currently — expanding beyond the walls of any one organization.

Objectives:

The goal of this strategic planning continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with new skills to use as members of an interprofessional strategic planning team. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify at least one new strength you can contribute to interprofessional team strategic planning sessions
  • Describe how to create optimal IP team composition
  • Describe how to use good enough to push on (GEPO) and simple rules when designing strategic plans for complex environments
