Summary:

Despite recent improvements in patient access to medical care in the U.S., diabetic foot ulcers continue to be a prevalent health problem. Interprofessional approaches used to manage other diseases have also been shown to help prevent the occurrence of diabetic ulcers. In addition, understanding the pathophysiology of diabetic ulcers to enhance screening and prevention skills, appreciation of the principles of offloading, optimal wound care, and adjunct therapies may all contribute to prevention and healing of the vast majority of diabetic foot ulcers. Once healing is accomplished, the prevention of recurrent ulcer development is emerging as an important strategy for this at-risk population. Thus, education of both primary care providers and patients remains of paramount importance.

Objectives:

The goal of this diabetic foot ulcer continuing education program is to provide physicians, nurses, dietitians, imaging technologists, and physical therapists with information regarding the development, prevention, and care of diabetic wounds. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify three components of diabetic peripheral neuropathy and explain how they may lead to development of a diabetic foot ulcer
  • Identify strategies for ulcer prevention
  • Discuss critical elements of the physical examination that identify patients at risk for
  • diabetic foot ulcers
  • Illustrate diagnostic and management options for infected or osteomyelitic diabetic foot ulcers
  • Describe principles of offloading, optimal wound care, and adjunct therapies in managing diabetic foot ulcers
  • Define barriers to effective care implementation for better disease management
