Breast cancer is the most common cancer that women may face in their lifetimes. About one in eight women (12%) will have a lifetime probability of developing breast cancer. It will touch the lives of most healthcare professionals of various disciplines, either personally or professionally. Overall, of an estimated 40,890 deaths from breast cancer this year, 40,450 will be women and 440 will be men. For the first time last year, the incidence rates among white and black women converged. A team of healthcare professionals can be an excellent source of information and support to patients, family, and caregivers during every phase of the disease continuum; for example, patients may experience a high level of anxiety during the prediagnostic period. Healthcare professionals across disciplines can help patients by keeping them informed about what to expect. This two-part series on breast cancer discusses the disease, risk factors, diagnostics, and treatments.

The goal of this breast cancer continuing education program is to provide nurses, physicians, and imaging technologists with an overview of treatment and psychosocial support for patients with breast cancer. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify treatment modalities for breast cancer
  • Discuss possible adverse effects of the treatment modalities
  • Describe collaborative health interventions and supportive strategies used for patients navigating breast cancer
