Summary:

Breast cancer is the most common cancer (excluding skin cancer) that women may have to face in their lifetimes. About one in eight women (12%) will have a lifetime probability of developing breast cancer. The good news is that mortality rates from cancer for women continued to decline 1.4% between 2007 and 2011. A 35% decline in breast cancer mortality accounts for much of this decrease. At the same time, five-year survival rates have increased from 76% in 1975 to 92% in 2010 in whites and 62% to 80% in blacks. ACS released new breast cancer screening guidelines in October 2015.  Healthcare professionals across disciplines can help patients by keeping them informed about what to expect. This two-part series on breast cancer explains the disease, risk factors, diagnostics and treatments.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, physicians and imaging technologists with an overview of breast cancer risk and prognostic factors, diagnostic modalities and psychosocial support for patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss early detection guidelines and risk factors for breast cancer
  • Identify diagnostic modalities for breast cancer
  • Describe factors that help with prognosis and treatment decisions for patients with breast cancer
