Summary:

Schools, counties, states and athletic organizations are paying attention to the dangers of concussions and taking steps to mitigate them. A concussion results from a direct blow to the head, neck or body in which impulsive forces are transmitted to the brain. A concussion is a closed head injury that may result in loss of consciousness and causes functional rather than structural damage to the brain. Injury is due to acceleration-deceleration and rotational forces to the brain. A graduated return to play plan should be instituted for all athletes sustaining a concussion in order to allow for complete recovery. Healthcare providers can do much to inform the public and patients about their dangers.
