Summary:

In 2003, The Joint Commission launched a certification program for primary stroke centers using the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association recommendations. The new stroke certification program prompted hospitals across the nation to develop protocols, guidelines, and plans of care to treat stroke as a medical emergency. Now there are more than 1,000 certified PSCs in the United States. The coalition has also published recommendations for advanced certification of comprehensive stroke centers, which offer neurointerventional service. In 2012, TJC began offering a certification process for CSCs. While a PSC can handle most acute stroke patients, a CSC can handle all stroke patients, including the most complex and complicated cases. This module will familiarize nurses and other healthcare professionals with certification standards and compliance requirements of certified primary and comprehensive stroke centers.

Objectives:

The goal of this stroke center certification continuing education program is to familiarize nurses and EMS professionals with certification standards and compliance requirements of certified primary and comprehensive stroke centers. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain the requirements for a certified primary stroke center
  • Explain the requirements for a certified comprehensive stroke center
  • Discuss the required educational topics for the stroke patient
