Summary:

Heart failure is a common condition of the heart that is a complex clinical syndrome resulting from a structural or functional cardiac disorder in which the ventricle cannot adequately fill or eject blood. Heart failure is categorized as an end-stage heart condition that results from or is worsened by other chronic conditions. Heart failure has a major impact in the United States as well as globally regarding mortality, hospitalizations, and economics. Currently, there is no cure for heart failure; however, appropriate long-term management of guideline-directed therapy involving self-care and nonpharmacological and pharmacological management has improved morbidity and mortality.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to ensure that pharmacists, physicians, and nurses can benefit from a comprehensive review and update of guideline-directed medical care for patients with heart failure. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the goals of therapy for heart failure
  • Review epidemiology, impact, and prognosis of heart failure
  • Differentiate between old and new terms for heart failure such as systolic heart failure, diastolic heart failure, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, heart failure with borderline ejection fraction, and heart failure with improved ejection fraction
  • Review the role of the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association staging and New York Heart Association functional classification in guiding treatment by the healthcare team
  • Identify the general approach to managing a patient with heart failure from a team perspective
  • Review nonpharmacological and pharmacological treatment options for the various stages and classifications of heart failure
  • Review patient-specific education points and self-care
