Summary:

The history of diacetylmorphine (heroin) along with current epidemiological data and overdose statistics together illustrate the dangers associated with use and abuse of, dependence on, and addiction to this drug. Characteristics of heroin such as its appearance, chemical structure, administration, metabolism, and mechanism of action are addressed in this continuing education module to elaborate on how the drug elicits such a strong, unique euphoric effect compared to other opioid medications. Additionally, various treatment approaches for the management of acute and chronic heroin use are discussed. This includes the identification and treatment of heroin overdose, withdrawal, addiction, and other associated complications of chronic use. It is essential for all healthcare professionals to understand heroin’s use and treatment management for users.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide interdisciplinary healthcare professionals with adequate information about the background, clinical presentation, and team-based management of heroin use, abuse, addiction, and overdose. After studying the material presented in this continuing education module, you will be able to:
  • Review the pharmacology and abuse potential of heroin
  • Describe the signs, symptoms, and treatment of patients with heroin toxicity
  • Identify ways the healthcare team works together to recognize and manage the complications of heroin abuse and addiction
