Summary:

Worldwide, suicide was the 18th leading cause of death in 2016, with the highest rates found in countries with advanced healthcare. People with substance use, borderline personality disorder, anorexia nervosa, depression, and bipolar disorder have the highest risk. CDC statistics indicate that all age groups are affected, with some specific concerns for older adults and for adolescents. There has, however, also been a startling rise in suicide among middle-aged Americans. Percentage increases for middle-aged Americans are the highest for any age group, and the CDC has identified the suicide rate among middle-aged Americans as a public health concern. This course provides nurses, advanced practice nurses, licensed vocational nurses, physicians, physician assistants, social workers, and psychologists with information about the issue of suicide and its prevention strategies and will help them meet the Washington State requirement on suicide prevention.
