Summary:

Globally, millions have become infected with HIV and have a great risk of morbidity and mortality from opportunistic infections associated with AIDS. Although the incidence of OIs is less among people being treated with antiretroviral therapy, OIs will remain a significant cause of illness for those without access to ART or for those with suboptimal response to treatment. Familiarity with the disease’s spectrum of expression in patients is necessary, while mastering the growing arsenal of information about HIV is a professional imperative.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to enhance nurses’ and physicians’ ability to care for adult patients with HIV-opportunistic infections. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List two classes of drugs used to combat HIV disease
  • Name three AIDS-related opportunistic infections that are reactivations of previously acquired infections
  • Describe the impact effective antiretroviral treatment has on the incidence and morbidity associated with opportunistic infections
