Summary:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 24 people experience physical violence, rape, or stalking in the United States every minute. Only 3% of women who are murdered at home are killed by strangers. On average, more than 3 women and 1 man are victims of homicide from intimate partner violence (IPV) every day in the United States. Intimate partner homicide accounted for 30% of the murders of women and 5% of the murders of men. This educational activity will provide healthcare professionals with information about the identification and management of victims of domestic violence also known as IPV.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to provide healthcare professionals with information about the identification and management of victims of domestic violence or intimate partner violence (IPV) and to meet Florida’s state mandatory continuing education requirements in domestic violence. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Recognize physical, emotional, and sexual abuse in IPV.
  • Define the differences between emotional, physical, or sexual abuse in adults, teens, children, and the elderly.
  • Identify the importance of direct and indirect questioning in screening all patients for IPV.
  • Describe at least 2 assessment observations that are integral when charting on injuries that may have been sustained through IPV.
  • Identify the correct procedure for safely asking potential victims of IPV if they have been abused.
  • Recognize that IPV occurs in relationships of people from all socioeconomic backgrounds, ethnicities, and sexual orientations.
