Summary:

Pancreatic cancer remains difficult to diagnose and treat because no clear early warning signs and symptoms exist, and many symptoms reported are vague and can be attributed to other, benign causes. Pancreatic cancer remains the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. In 2018, it is estimated that 55,440 men and women will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and about 44,330 men and women will die of it. The rate of pancreatic cancer has increased, although it has remained fairly stable over the past few years. All healthcare professionals need to be informed about pancreatic cancer so they can be aware of its signs, symptoms, and risk factors, and be knowledgeable about treatment options. This module discusses risk factors, diagnostics, and treatment options for pancreatic cancer.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to inform nurses and radiologic technologists about the incidence, pathophysiology, identification, and treatment of pancreatic cancer. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name three signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer
  • Compare and contrast two treatment options for pancreatic cancer
  • Discuss two palliative care interventions for pancreatic cancer
