Summary:

Hormone replacement therapy has been available to women for decades and has been recommended for symptom prevention and management as well as for prevention of a number of comorbidities. But in 2002, the findings of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) and the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study follow-up (HERS II) changed healthcare for postmenopausal women. Rather than providing women with what was formerly referred to as hormone replacement therapy, healthcare providers today advise women to take menopausal hormone therapy when needed for symptom control at the lowest effective dose, for the shortest time possible, as close to the last menstrual period as possible, and within 10 years of menopause. This module provides the healthcare practitioner with information about menopausal hormone therapy and information they need to care for menopausal patients.

Objectives:

The purpose of this program is to provide nurses, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners with information about hormone replacement therapy and caring for menopausal patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss how the findings of the Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study follow-up and the Women's Health Initiative changed the approach to midlife women’s healthcare
  • Discuss the benefits and risks associated with hormone replacement therapy
  • Describe alternatives to hormone therapy
