Summary:

In 2015, there were 703,243 patients undergoing dialytic therapy in the United States. Dialysis is a form of therapy that replaces renal filtration for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), whose glomerular filtration is less than 15 mL/minute and who are clinically symptomatic. Dialysis is the life-sustaining process of cleansing the blood of accumulated waste products and removing retained fluid. It is considered a palliative procedure when performed for ESRD. The most common forms of dialysis are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. This module provides nurses and physicians with an overview of dialysis and the nursing management of patients with ESRD.

Objectives:

The goal of this dialysis and end-stage renal disease course is to provide nurses and physicians with an overview of dialysis and the management of patients with ESRD. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the components necessary for dialysis.
  • Explain the types of access needed for dialysis.
  • Describe the nurse’s role in caring for patients with ESRD.
