Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome affects an estimated 836,000 to 2.5 million adults in the U.S. with a constellation of debilitating symptoms, including severe fatigue, pain, sleep disturbances, and cognitive problems. Fewer than 10% of people who meet the strict case definition criteria have been diagnosed and treated by a healthcare professional. ME/CFS is defined as debilitating fatigue that is not alleviated by rest and results in substantial reduction in previous levels of occupational, educational, social, or personal activities. Specific tests do not identify ME/CFS; therefore, current recommendations suggest diagnosis requires the following: the existence of six or more months of continuous fatigue not related to other conditions and unrelieved by interventions; fatigue which interferes with ADLs; and four or more of a set of eight symptoms such as disordered sleep, pain, diminished concentration, and post-exertional malaise.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide an overview of myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome, a complex multi-symptom disorder. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • State the symptoms of ME/CFS
  • Discuss the biopsychosocial impact of ME/CFS
  • Identify management interventions for people with ME/CFS

Information is outdated and does not reflect current research. It recommends graded exercise therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy which were the basis for the PACE trial published in The Lancet journal in February 2011. This was an unblinded study with major flaws that have raised serious concerns about the validity, reliability, and integrity of the findings. In September 2017 the CDC removed these recommendations from their website. Additional resources should include: June 2016 TED talk by Jennifer Brea. "What happens when you have a disease doctors can't diagnose." UNREST by Jennifer Brea. The award-winning documentary that made the top 15 films nominated for an Acadamy Award. Available on multiple platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, You Tube. THE FORGOTTEN PLAGUE by Ryan Prior
