Objectives:

The purpose of the program is to inform healthcare professionals of the increasing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria throughout healthcare and to offer strategies for reducing the spread of resistance. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —

  • Explain why 75% of antibiotic prescriptions written each year for outpatient visits are inappropriate.
  • Discuss one method of controlling the rapid increase in bacterial resistance in U.S. hospitals.
