Tinnitus, the perception of unwanted sounds coming from the ear, is a symptom, not a disease, and is one of the most common health conditions in the United States. It may occur in people whose hearing ranges from normal to deaf. Persistent tinnitus can affect a person’s mood, leading to general psychological distress and depression. The most common negative effects on quality of life are a sense of annoyance, inability to concentrate, and sleep disturbances. This course describes tinnitus, its causes, diagnosis, and treatment.

The goal of this course is to provide healthcare professionals with practical guidelines to assess and manage the care of patients with tinnitus. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the prevalence and health consequences of tinnitus.
  • Describe age-related and pathologic causes of tinnitus.
  • Outline the essential elements in the assessment of patients with tinnitus and in healthcare interventions.
