As people age, there is an increased risk of developing sarcopenia, a condition characterized by losses of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and functional ability. Sarcopenia can lead to an increased risk of falls. Healthcare professionals may encounter patients with sarcopenia in a variety of settings such as hospitals, assisted living facilities, long-term care facilities, outpatient clinics, and even during home health visits. It is important that healthcare professionals can identify and address this common health issue. By understanding the potential causes and resulting effects and providing education regarding prevention measures, providers may improve patient outcomes and quality of life. This educational offering provides information regarding the causes, contributing factors, potential risks, and possible consequences of this condition. This course will also review specific prevention measures and information about the management of sarcopenia.

The goal of this continuing education course is to provide current information to enhance healthcare professionals’ knowledge of and awareness about sarcopenia. By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify the 3 clinical measurements used to diagnose this condition.
  • Describe the factors which may cause or contribute to this condition.
  • State ways to partner with other healthcare team members to enhance prevention, identification, and management efforts.
