The U.S. is becoming more culturally diverse than ever, but the healthcare workforce does not necessarily reflect that diversity. For example, the nursing workforce continues to be largely non-Hispanic white. Cultural differences among staff can create problems in communication and lead to conflicts that affect how the team works together. Learning about cultural differences in work patterns and communication styles and specific strategies for working effectively within a diverse environment will be addressed.

The goal of this cultural competency continuing education program is to enhance the medical professional’s abilities to work effectively with colleagues from other cultures. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain characteristics of the increasingly diverse workplace
  • Describe how cultural differences in work patterns and communication styles influence the environment
  • Identify person- and organization-centered strategies for working effectively within a diverse environment

This course is very helpful to the workforce as it clarifies bias within the workplace as it relates to cultural differences. This is a topic that should be discussed often within an organization to help develop and strengthen the organization.

This course was very insightful especially in the current position that I hold. We deal with a variety of diverse staff, issues and concerns that are addressed and obviously a full understanding of basic personal and communication styles needs to be addressed with staff. Conflict is the main problem that arises between communities of different backgrounds and traditions in our work place. It appears at times that it is an us vs them with staff and Administration.
