Summary:

Disparities in the prevalence, management, progression, and outcomes of pain-related conditions are widely recognized. Generally, minorities report greater pain, disability, and suffering when compared to whites, with influential sociocultural factors grouped into patient, provider, and systemic factors. This continuing education module helps healthcare professionals become familiar with cultural differences associated with pain perceptions and pain management.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to emphasize the important role culture plays when patients experience pain. The program also addresses the patient, provider, and systemic factors associated with disparities in pain assessment, management, and treatment along with regulatory requirements from The Joint Commission relative to pain management. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe how culture can influence a patient’s perception and expression of pain
  • Discuss how cultural background affects a healthcare professional’s response to and management of pain
  • Relate strategies for reducing unintentional bias in pain assessment and promoting management decisions to respond to a patient’s pain in a culturally sensitive manner
