COPD is characterized by airflow limitation that is not reversible. An estimated 12.7 million people in the U.S. ages 18 and older are known to have COPD. The airflow limitation is usually progressive and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response in the airways and the lung to noxious particles or gases. The evidence-based GOLD guidelines, updated in 2014, provide strategies for healthcare providers worldwide to prevent, diagnose and manage COPD. This module provides clinicians with information about the incidence, causes and symptoms of COPD and latest clinical guidelines.

The goal of this program is to provide health professionals with information about the incidence, causes, and symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —

  • Define COPD and identify its most common causes.
  • List three classes of medications to treat patients with COPD.
  • Discuss four areas in which education can benefit patients with COPD.
