Healthcare facilities should be prepared for terrorist attacks with chemical weapons. The healthcare team’s ability to recognize and respond to chemical attacks is critical to preparedness efforts. This course gives an overview of chemical agents that can be used as weapons. It also discusses the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of someone exposed to these weapons.


The goal of this course is to familiarize healthcare professionals with chemical agents that could be used in a terrorist attack and special considerations for care. After studying the information presented here, you will able to:
  • Identify the types of chemical agents that can be used as weapons.
  • Describe symptoms related to a chemical attack.
  • Describe treatments for victims exposed to nerve agents, cyanides, respiratory irritants, and vesicants.
