Cataracts develop as part of the aging process; by age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and an important cause of blindness and visual impairment in the U.S. Nurses make a difference in the lives of patients with cataracts, from educating them about how to reduce their risk of developing cataracts to caring for them after cataract surgery.

The purpose of this program is to provide physicians and advanced care providers with information about the prevalence of cataracts, their effect on quality of life, revolutionary changes in surgical treatment and measures the healthcare team can take to ensure optimal functional vision. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe common types of cataracts
  • Discuss the criteria for cataract surgery
  • List two comorbidities that have a significant effect on surgical outcome
