Summary:

Comparing numbers of total cholesterol and of “good” and “bad” cholesterol has become a regular topic of conversation among Americans. Yet despite the public’s increased awareness of the link between cholesterol levels and heart disease, many people don’t comprehend the whole picture. This educational activity addresses topics to help clinicians interpret lipid profiles, the concept of global risk assessment, and the ways therapeutic lifestyle changes can improve health and decrease risk.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to inform clinicians about the global risk assessment for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease associated with lipid profile values and the therapeutic lifestyle changes recommended for reducing cardiovascular risk. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name three key factors in global risk assessment for cardiovascular disease risk as defined by the 2013 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Guideline on the Assessment of Cardiovascular Risk
  • Explain the subtypes of lipids, including low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides
  • Identify three elements of therapeutic lifestyle changes
