Summary:

Pediatric cardiac arrest is an uncommon event. Although most pediatric patients who suffer cardiac arrest do not go into rhythms that require defibrillation (e.g., ventricular fibrillation, pulseless ventricular tachycardia), those who do benefit from prompt and appropriate defibrillation. Questions about the number of joules, the size of pads, and the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) are asked every time the words “pediatric code” are heard. Knowing how and when to use the defibrillator and/or AED on pediatric patients in cardiac arrest is essential to providing safe, quality care. This knowledge will help increase survival rates and improve neurologic outcomes. An extensive review of the current research, evidence-based practice, and American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines provides a concise standard to use when resuscitating pediatric patients.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education course is to familiarize physicians and nurses with issues surrounding pediatric defibrillation. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain how defibrillation affects a heart in ventricular fibrillation
  • Describe the incidence of shockable arrhythmias in the pediatric population
  • Discuss at least two concerns regarding the use AEDs in the pediatric population
