Given current population statistics, dementia in the older adult has become a major health concern. Resources, both human and financial, are being challenged. The population of people older than age 65 is expected to grow to 20% of the population by 2030. Caring for the older adult with dementia requires a strong knowledge of senior health issues and resources as well as excellent teamwork skills. Today’s healthcare professional faces unprecedented challenges in providing compassionate care with a focus on dignity and quality of life, while juggling a heavily regulated system and dealing with reductions in staff and resources. This educational activity provides the background information needed to increase healthcare professionals’ understanding about dementia, its causes and management, and their important role in providing care.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses and social workers with an overview of how to better recognize dementia and manage the care of older adults with dementia. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define dementia and describe its characteristics
  • Differentiate between types of dementia
  • Discuss treatment modalities and interventions used in the management of dementia
