More than 30 years have passed since radon was recognized as a threat to the health of Americans, and more than 21,000 lives are lost each year due to radon-associated lung cancer. This colorless, odorless gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in smokers and the leading cause in nonsmokers. This course will familiarize nurses and health educators with health issues associated with indoor environmental radon and spur them to actively convey that risk to their patients.

The goal of this radon continuing education program is to familiarize nurses and physicians with health issues associated with indoor environmental radon and spur them to convey that risk to their patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the source of indoor environmental radon and its association with three types of cancer
  • Discuss health professionals’ roles in disseminating information about radon’s health effects, testing, and techniques for mitigation
  • List three reasons why the public still fails to view radon as a health risk
