Summary:

The Tourette Association of America estimates that one in every 160 children has been diagnosed with TS, and one out of 100 children has a tic disorder. TS affects boys three to four times as often as girls, and about 86% of those afflicted have been diagnosed with at least one additional mental health condition, neurodevelopmental condition, or behavioral disorder. There is no magic bullet to cure TS, but there are several evidenced-based treatment avenues available. Children with TS pass through a large number of practice settings — perhaps most often in schools — where school nurses, occupational therapists, and speech language pathologists have a vital role in developing a plan of accommodation. This course outlines the history, diagnosis, treatment, and management of TS.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to educate nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and social workers about the neurological disorder known as Tourette syndrome. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the types of tics that are present in TS
  • Differentiate TS from other tic disorders based on diagnostic criteria
  • Identify the complex needs of the majority of those affected by TS
  • Describe therapies used in treating TS
