Summary:

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a common, disabling condition characterized by uncontrollable thoughts and disruptive behaviors. Once thought rare, it’s now recognized as one of the five most common causes of mental health disability worldwide. About 1.6% of the U.S. population age 18 or older (about 1% of all Americans) has OCD in a given year. This continuing education module will help you understand how to help patients and those around them cope with what can be a debilitating psychological disorder.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to enhance nurses’, physicians’, and social workers’ ability to care for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Recognize the clinical features of OCD
  • Describe pharmacological management of OCD, including adverse effects from medications
  • Identify nonpharmacological therapeutic treatment options and interventions for patients with OCD

Although I do not work in the mental health and am not a practitioner I found this course very interesting. We do work with patients who have neurocardiogenic syncope and in visiting with the physicians I work with I found it interesting that some of the meds used for treating that are also used for treating OCD
