Summary:

Sufficient, quality sleep is critical for the health, well-being and quality of life. Sleeping difficulties affect as many as 50% of older adults contributing to functional limitations and loss of independence, as well as increased morbidity and mortality in this population. All too often, sleep difficulties and disorders in older adults are erroneously considered an inevitable part of aging and go unaddressed, unrecognized, undiagnosed, undertreated, or untreated in this age group. Sleep difficulties should not be assumed to be an inherent part of the aging process. This educational activity will enhance your ability to identify sleep-related problems, correct misconceptions about sleep, provide sleep management patient education and make appropriate referrals to sleep specialists.

Objectives:

The goal of this sleep continuing education program is to increase nurses’ ability to improve sleep quality in older patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the physiology and stages of sleep
  • Differentiate age-related and pathological changes in sleep
  • Discuss strategies designed to enhance sleep among older patients
