Summary:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive disease of the central nervous system (CNS) caused by damage to the protective myelin sheath covering neurons. It is estimated that there are more than 2.3 million people worldwide with MS. In the United States, the average person has a 0.1% chance of developing MS. MS lesions, or plaques, disrupt electrical impulses from neurons in the CNS to muscles that can affect mobility, elimination, energy, vision, and other functions. This course discusses diagnosis, symptom management, treatment, and nursing care of patients with MS.

Objectives:

The goal of this multiple sclerosis (MS) continuing education program is to provide general information to bolster healthcare professionals’ knowledge of treatment, including management of symptoms and relapses as well as approaches to slow disease progression. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Distinguish the classifications of MS.
  • Outline the basic pathophysiology of MS.
  • Identify two interventions for each of the MS symptoms reviewed: fatigue, mobility impairment, and elimination dysfunction.
  • Describe the treatment for acute relapses.
  • Recognize the various treatment options for chronic MS.
  • Discuss how members of the interprofessional team can collaborate to manage a patient with MS from a team care perspective.
