Hospice patients experience pain across multiple domains. Clinicians who care for hospice patients and their families need to be knowledgeable about the appropriate assessment and management of suffering in those experiencing serious life-limiting illness. This module will provide an overview of the different types of pain experienced by hospice patients and how to manage that pain.

The goal of this continuing education module is to update nurses’ and physicians’ ability to recognize and understand different types of pain experienced by hospice patients. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify five types of pain in hospice patients and list an example of each
  • State the World Health Organization’s three-step analgesic ladder for pain control
  • Relate key philosophical components of hospice care and two barriers to pain management
