Although Parkinson’s disease has been recognized for about two centuries, awareness has dramatically increased with its acknowledgment by public personalities, such as actor Michael J. Fox and the late boxer Mohammed Ali. While the greatest risk factor is increasing age, 10% of PD cases occur in people younger than 50. Healthcare professionals can expect to encounter patients with PD in settings throughout the healthcare system and should be aware of the complexities of this chronic, neurodegenerative disorder.

The goal of this continuing education program is to update healthcare professionals’ knowledge about Parkinson’s disease. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify motor and nonmotor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
  • Relate intervention strategies for treatment of early and advanced Parkinson’s disease
  • Describe future developments for treatment of Parkinson’s disease
