Summary:

Today about 3,000 American babies a year are born with neural tube defects, a 25% drop since 1995. This reduction is attributed to folic acid food fortification and the push to have all women of childbearing age take folic acid supplements regularly. Yet only half of women of childbearing age take this supplement. Healthcare providers should educate these women about the importance of taking folic acid supplements before they become pregnant as well as during early pregnancy, when the neural tube forms. Folic acid also appears to have a beneficial effect on other diseases and disorders, such as cardiovascular disease and autism.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to give dietitians, dietary managers, school nutritionists, EMTs and paramedics, fitness professionals, health educators, nurses, and physicians an overview of the benefits of dietary folate and folic acid supplementation in the prevention of neural tube defects and other health problems.

The content in this course is applicable to dietitians, certified dietary managers, school nutritionists, EMTs and paramedics, fitness professionals, health educators, nurses, and physicians. After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Define neural tube defects and their effects.
  • Describe three or more ways to increase the serum folate level in women of childbearing age.
  • Identify at least four health problems that are reduced by adequate folate intake.
