Summary:

In 2015, about 1,670 children died due to child abuse or neglect. While this number is upsetting, many practitioners and researchers think the actual number is much greater. While some abused children grow up to live outwardly normal lives, many who have been subjected to abuse or neglect become adults with various behavioral issues stemming from that abuse. Some suffer lifelong disabilities, both physical and psychological. Many perpetuate the life of violence they have suffered. Healthcare providers in all settings are presented with opportunities to identify families at risk for child abuse. Knowledge of risk factors, signs of abuse/neglect, and prevention strategies are necessary to disrupt the cycle of abuse. This course provides an overview of those risk factors, how to identify potential child abuse and neglect, and prevention interventions.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education module is to update healthcare providers’ ability to recognize, report and, if appropriate, treat victims of child abuse. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify signs and symptoms that may indicate that a child is a victim of abuse
  • Name four risk factors each for becoming a perpetrator and a victim of child abuse
  • Relate essential elements that must be documented in cases of suspected child abuse
