MDMA, also known as ecstasy, is one of the most dangerous drugs threatening young people today. MDMA is one of the easiest illegal drugs to obtain. The drug is chemically very similar to LSD and amphetamine, and has a similar ability to induce hallucinations (both sensory and visual). MDMA has now become a popular drug of abuse at social events, such as hip hop parties, raves, rock concerts and all-night parties frequented by the younger generation, which includes college and high school students. The root of its universal popularity is the mistaken belief that ecstasy is safe and has minimal toxicity. MDMA can adversely affect several organ systems in the body that can result in hyperthermia, hypertension, and liver and central nervous system toxicity.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide physicians and pharmacists with accurate information about MDMA, its toxicity and the treatment of overdose. After studying the material presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the manufacture of MDMA and the impurities found in it
  • Discuss the clinical features of MDMA toxicity
  • Describe the management of a patient who presents with MDMA toxicity
