Although opioid medications are widely prescribed for pain management, they may not always be the most effective therapy. Understanding the etiology of pain, especially chronic pain, can be challenging for healthcare providers, which in turn can make managing pain difficult. Developing a systematic yet holistic approach to the evaluation of patients with pain can be helpful for healthcare providers and beneficial for patients.

The goal of this controlled substances continuing education program is to discuss the role of prescription opioids in pain management by reviewing the history of opioids along with their classification as controlled substances. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the pharmacology of opioid medications.
  • Describe how opioid medications affect the physiologic pain pathways.
  • Identify safe and effective modalities for pain management along with a role for prescription opioids.
