Metabolic syndrome represents a complex collection of chronic illnesses associated with central obesity. A localized inflammatory reaction in the central adipose tissue progresses into a chronic, systemic inflammatory state, mediated by multiple, interconnected substances. MetS has widespread systemic influence and affects multiple organ systems leading to an overall increased morbidity and mortality. Components of MetS include insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, atherogenic dyslipidemias, and chronic inflammation. Many pro-inflammatory substances abound in MetS, while protective, anti-inflammatory substances are lacking. These substances involve multiple feedback loops that contribute to the development of many associated illnesses. While briefly reviewing some clinical implications of MetS, this module focuses on the complex pathophysiology of MetS through a discussion of highly active biological agents that contribute to and propagate MetS.

The goal of this continuing education module is to familiarize physicians with the complicated pathophysiology of the metabolic syndrome. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify the major risk factor for development of the metabolic syndrome
  • Describe the main components of the metabolic syndrome
  • Define some of the biologically active substances involved in the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome
