Cricothyroidotomy, sometimes referred to as cricothyrotomy, is a lifesaving procedure in people who have upper airway problems. When a patient presents with difficulty breathing, and the conventional methods of intubation using an endotracheal tube or a laryngeal mask airway are ineffective or may not be possible, a cricothyroidotomy may be performed. Even though cricothyroidotomy is a simple procedure that is often done in the ED or on the medical floor, this means of establishing a patent airway requires skill and knowledge about neck anatomy. Any deviations from technique protocol can lead to a variety of serious complications. There are three ways to perform a cricothyroidotomy, and the type of procedure selected depends on the patient scenario and surgeon’s experience. The three options include needle cricothyroidotomy, percutaneous cricothyroidotomy using the Seldinger technique and surgical cricothyroidotomy.

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide healthcare professionals with information about cricothyroidotomy, its indications, technique and potential complications. Following the completion of this educational activity, the surgical technologist will be able to:
  • Describe the indications for cricothyroidotomy.
  • List the different types of cricothyroidotomy procedures.
  • Recall the equipment required to perform cricothyroidotomy.
  • Explain how cricothyroidotomy is performed.
  • Discuss the early and late complications of cricothyroidotomy.
