Summary:

The study of the human microbiome and its constituents is one of the hottest topics in science today. The potential of probiotic and prebiotic use to improve many diet-related conditions from diarrhea to irritable bowel syndrome, as well as potentially chronic diseases such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes, makes this topic of special interest to clinicians. When is their use indicated? When is it contraindicated? How much should patients be given, and when? Clinicians must learn what probiotics and prebiotics are and how they may be used in the treatment of certain illnesses and chronic conditions. Practitioners will be provided tools for learning species, strains, and quality of products for probiotics and the top prebiotic foods. This course offers the most up-to-date information that current research provides, assisting clinicians with making more targeted recommendations for their patients.

Objectives:

The goal of this module is to teach healthcare practitioners what probiotics and prebiotics are and how to select the appropriate probiotic or prebiotic for various medical conditions. After studying the information presented here, practitioners will be able to:
  • Explain the difference between probiotics and prebiotics
  • Identify sources of both
  • Describe the role of probiotics and prebiotics in treating various medical conditions
  • Provide recommendations for the use of probiotics and prebioticss

Provided clarity on the difference between pre- and probiotics, strains of bacteria and yeast that effectively prevent and/or treat certain diseases and introdroduced symbiotics.
