Summary:

Electroconvulsive therapy has been perceived as a horrible treatment and surrounded by myths — most of which have arisen due to ignorance about the procedure. Today, the American Psychiatric Association has established strict guidelines for ECT administration. The process is regulated, well controlled and performed after thoroughly assessing the patient. ECT is used much less often today, partly because of the availability of potent and more convenient antidepressants, as well as progress in the field of psychotherapy. Under the APA’s recommended “informed consent” protocol, permission to administer ECT is meticulously reviewed and each case is individually analyzed.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide pharmacists and physicians with adequate information about electroconvulsive therapy, the myths associated with the therapy, present-day indications and potential complications. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the evolution of ECT and its present-day indications
  • Describe the preclinical workup and process of administering ECT
  • List the potential complications of ECT
