Summary:

Most violent crime cases in our society are documented statistically in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports and National Crime Victimization Surveys and clinically by the number of victims admitted to EDs of trauma centers and hospitals. People are more apt to fear the possibility of a home invasion in which they or someone they love could be harmed by an unknown intruder. However, what many experience is far more devastating and unexpected: harm by someone they know and trust — a close family member or friend. This is known as domestic violence.

Objectives:

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, physicians, and social workers with an understanding of family violence and its impact on family members and the family social structure. After studying the information presented here, you should be able to:
  • Define the scope of family violence and trends
  • Identify biopsychosocial characteristics of family violence
  • Indicate appropriate interventions for assisting victims of family violence
