This module introduces the Romani (Gypsy) people; presents common Romani values, beliefs, and practices related to healthcare; and provides insight into the promotion of culturally competent care so providers can better care for this patient population. The Roma are a particularly diverse group, having migrated to multiple geographic areas throughout the world. Providers can use generalizations about Roma cultural practices as a starting point for patient and family assessment, but they need to ask Romani patients and their families about their unique values and practices. As North America becomes more culturally diverse, providing culturally congruent care to patients and their families, as well as understanding and integrating their cultural values, beliefs, and practices into the care plan, are crucial to increase patient and family satisfaction and improve healthcare outcomes.

The goal of this module is to provide the certified MA with information about the Romani (Gypsy) culture so he or she can provide culturally congruent care to Romani patients and their families. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the history of the Romani people, including geographical origin, language, and religion
  • Identify healthcare-related cultural values and traditions important to the Romani patient and family
  • Explain interventions helpful in integrating Romani cultural values and traditions into their healthcare experience
