Summary:

Many patients require temporary epicardial pacing in the immediate postoperative stage. They may need augmentation of their cardiac output, suppression of dysrhythmias, or conversion of atrial flutter through rapid atrial pacing. Those who develop heart block postoperatively require pacing to maintain normal atrioventricular conduction. This activity will address temporary epicardial pacing after cardiovascular surgery and the care of patients undergoing this therapy.

Objectives:

The goal of this epicardial pacing continuing education program is to increase the certified medical assistants’ knowledge about temporary epicardial pacing after cardiovascular surgery and about their role as part of the healthcare team in post-procedure care of patients undergoing this therapy. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define common terminology associated with temporary epicardial pacemaker therapy
  • Discover ways to help the healthcare team troubleshoot problems that can occur with temporary epicardial pacing
  • Discuss the CMA’s role in the cardiovascular office setting regarding the postoperative and acute care educational reinforcement of patients who require temporary epicardial pacing
